Reaction to A Bat Is Born

I. Summary

The poem I chose to summarize and react to is A Bat is Born by Randall Jarrell. The type of this poem seems to be narrative poetry because it seems to tell a story of one night in the life of a new born bat. The poem begins when the bat is born and then tells us what happens through the course of the baby bats first day of life with its mother.

1. Imagery
The poem uses very vivid imagery. The phrases that are used to describe the events in the baby bat's first day of life give us very clear images in our minds that show us what is happening.

2. Connotation
The words that used have strong connotations, they give is strong feelings about what is happening. For example, one line says, 'And then the mother dances through the night'. The word 'dance' gives us a light, happy feeling because we can imagine the wonderful feeling of dancing in the air.

Reaction to Desigual 2015 Spring and Summer Show

I. Summary

The fashion show I chose to react to is the Desigual 2015 Spring and Summer Show. Desigual is a fashion line that comes from Spain, and it often has a very colorful and playful look to its designs and color combinations. Desigual also likes to project a very free and playful image in its advertising. The clothing we see in this show displays these characteristics of Desigual's approach to fashion design.

There was a young lady named Joan
Who walked as she talked on the phone
While crossing the street
She was knocked off her feet
By a car that broke all her bones

I. Summary

The type of poem that I choose to create was a limerick. I chose to create this type of poem because I enjoy the humorous nature of limericks. In this poem I describe a very common situation that I see every day, a scene in which the main character is crossing a street while talking on her phone. She is careless when she crosses the street because she doesn't pay any attention to an oncoming car, and as a result suffers a serious accident.

1. Rhyme
The main character was deliberately made a young woman to help the rhyme scheme; the name 'Joan', which is a woman's name, rhymes with 'phone' and 'bone'. These three rhyming words are used at the ends of the first, second and fifth lines of the limerick. The words 'street' and 'feet' make up the rhyme scheme for the third and fourth lines. This rhyme scheme is very typical for limericks.

One interesting aspect of rhymes that are used in this poem is the internal rhyme of 'walking' and 'talking' in the second line. This internal rhyme increases the musical feeling in the poem. One unsatisfying aspect of the rhyme in this poem is the fact that the last word of the fifth line, 'bones' had to have the plural 's' added to it. Using the plural form 'bones' made sense in terms of the story and also worked better rhythmically than the singular 'bone'.

Like all limericks, this poem consists of five lines. The words at the ends of the first, second and fifth lines all rhyme, and each of these lines are of similar length. Also like many limericks, the first line introduces the character or characters, the second line introduces the situation, and the third, fourth and fifth lines describe a series of actions or events. Limericks are generally humorous, and this limerick attempts to be humorous. However, the humor is what we might call 'black humor' because the limerick makes a joke about something terrible, a traffic accident. I chose to make the main character a young woman because most of my readers are young women, and I want them to relate what happens to the character to themselves. There is a message of warning in this poem to my readers, 'Please be careful not to use your phone while crossing the street!'

CALL Reading Reaction Journal 5 - Short Film

I. Summary

I chose to summarize and react to the short film, The Most Beautiful Thing made in 2012 and written, directed and edited by Cameron Covell. In this film a very shy young high school student creates a relationship with another student who is unable to hear. Their relationship starts slowly and has some difficulties because of miscommunication, but ultimately they are able to overcome their misunderstandings and develop their relationship.

1. Main characters
The young man's character in the film is very lonely and on the outside of the social scene of 'the popular students'. He shows great tenderness and a true desire to build a positive relationship with his love interest.

This film is very touching and can easily bring tears of happiness to the eyes of even the most unsentimental person. I would recommend this film to anyone interested in love stories.

My Favorite Movie

My favorite movie is The Wizard of OZ.

I like this movie for three reasons:

For these reasons, I think this is a truly great movie.
